Heathcliff Andrew Ledger, an Australian actor and director was born on 4th<\/sup> April, 1979 in Perth, Australia. He is known for his role of The Joker<\/em> in The Dark Knight<\/em>, directed by Christopher Nolan in 2008 for which he got Academy Award for Best Actor in Supporting Role, posthumously. He died on 22nd<\/sup> January, 2008, at 28 in New York, USA due to Cardiac Arrest brought on by prescription drug intoxication.<\/p>\n

Ledger was son of Sally Ledger, a French teacher and Kim Ledger, a racecar driver and mining engineer. He went to Mary\u2019s Mount Primary School and Guildford Grammar School. He was very close to his elder sister and she inspired him to pursue acting career. His parents got divorced when he was 11. After completing his graduation exams at 17, he with his best friend travelled to Sydney then to Perth to make a career in acting.<\/p>\n

From 1992-99, he lived in Australia, took small roles in TV series and films. He acted in Clowning Around<\/em> (92), a TV series Ship and Shore<\/em> (93), Sweat<\/em> (96), Roar<\/em> (97) and Home and Away<\/em> (97). He made his debut in Australian film Blackrock<\/em> (97) and also starred in Two Hands<\/em>, an Australian Crime film directed by Gregor Jordan.<\/p>\n

In 1998, Ledger moved to USA for his career. He acted in 10 Things I Hate About You<\/em> (1999). Other than this his works include, The Patriot<\/em>\u00a0(2000),\u00a0A Knight’s Tale<\/em>\u00a0(2001), Brokeback Mountain<\/em>\u00a0(2005),\u00a0The Dark Knight<\/em>\u00a0(2008) and\u00a0The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus<\/em>\u00a0(2009), to name a few; the last two were released after his death.<\/p>\n

Ledger received numerous appraisals and awards such as Best International Actor from Australian Film Institute, got nominated for BAFTA Award for Best Actor in Leading Role and also for Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Brokeback Mountain<\/em>. He received praised and fan following for his iconic role of The Joker<\/em> in The Dark Knight<\/em>. He died during editing of this film and received Oscar for Best Actor in Supporting Role after his death. Alongside Academy Award, he won BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award and Best International Actor Award from Australian Film Institute in 2008.<\/p>\n

He married to Michelle Williams in 2004 and had one child with her. He is resting in Karrakatta Cemetery. He has been in controversies due to his relationships, method acting, his directorial interests, his passion for chess and lastly for his death as well.
