Cate Blanchett, an Australian actress was born on May 14, 1969 in Ivanhoe, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Her mother June, was a teacher and property developer and father Robert DeWitt Blanchett was a petty officer in US Navy who later on worked as Advertisement Executive. She is middle one of her two siblings raised by her mother and grandmother as her father died at 40 when she was 10, of a heart attack. Cate currently has residence in Sydney, Australia and Crowborough, England.
Cate’s full name is Catherine Elise Blanchett, is also a theatre director. She went to Ivanhoe Primary School for primary education, for secondary education she went to Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School and Methodist Ladies’ College. She got admission in University of Melbourne for fine arts but dropped out a year later. Then she enrolled in National Institute of Dramatic Arts and graduated in 1992.
Cate started her acting career by acting in a play, Electra in 1992 and her performance was acclaimed very well at NIDA. In 1993, she was awarded as Best Newcomer by Sydney Theatre Critics for her role in Timothy Daly’s Kafka Dances and Best Actress in Oleanna by David Mamet. She started her film career by acting as Nurse in Paradise Road in 1997. Then she did Oscar and Lucinda and Thank God He Met Lizzie after which she was famous for acting skills in Australia. Her international fame started with the movie Queen Elizabeth where she played Elizabeth 1, directed by Shekhar Kapur. This film got her Academy Award Nomination for the first time.
In 2001, she played Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings trilogy By Peter Jackson and again in The Hobbit. She played Katharine Hepburn in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator for which she got her Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Again in 2014, she got her Academy Award for Best Actress for Blue Jasmine.
Her more famous movies are Bandit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Babel. She is married to playwright and screenwriter Andrew Upton since 1997, has 4 children. She has done over 50 films and 20 theatre productions. Owing to her contribution to the arts, she was appointed Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by French Minister of Culture in 2012. Australian Government awarded Blanchett with Centenary Medal for her Services to Australian Society. Also she was awarded with Doctor of Letters by University of Sydney, Macquarie University and University of NSW for contribution to Arts, philanthropy and community.
